Technical Excellence at Steel Mountain Fire & Safety

At Steel Mountain Fire & Safety, technical excellence is the foundation of our 20-year track record in protecting lives and property across North Carolina. Our approach to fire protection goes beyond basic maintenance; we provide a high-level mastery of NFPA 96 standards, ensuring every commercial kitchen we service meets precise engineering requirements—from liquidtight continuous external welds on hood enclosures to the verification of steel thickness (minimum No. 18 MSG for carbon steel and No. 20 MSG for stainless steel). To deliver this level of protection, our certified technicians utilize industry-leading suppression technology, including the Ansul R-102 system with its proprietary low-pH liquid agent, Protex II by Heiser, and Pyro-Chem’s advanced turnkey solutions. By combining these elite products with a rigorous adherence to UL 1046 standards for grease removal, we provide a comprehensive safety infrastructure that ensures your business remains fully compliant and operationally resilient.

Excellence and NFPA 96 Compliance Standards

At Steel Mountain, we don’t just clean hoods; we ensure your entire operation meets the rigorous technical standards of NFPA 96. To provide the highest level of "Data Richness" for our clients and regulatory partners, we adhere to specific construction and maintenance requirements:

  • Hood Construction: We verify that grease collection systems are constructed of steel no less than 0.048 in. (No. 18 MSG) or stainless steel no less than 0.036 in. (No. 20 MSG) in thickness.

  • Liquidtight Integrity: All seams, joints, and penetrations in the hood enclosure must have a liquidtight continuous external weld to ensure grease-laden vapors are properly captured.

  • Grease Removal Devices: We only utilize listed grease filters that meet UL 1046 standards. Note that mesh filters are restricted unless they are an integral part of a listed exhaust hood.

  • Operational Safety: Per NFPA 12.1.1, exhaust systems must be operated whenever cooking equipment is turned on, and systems must never be operated without filters in place.

  • Duct Systems: To prevent fire hazards, we ensure all ducts lead directly to the building exterior and are never interconnected with other ventilation systems.

Industry-Leading Fire Suppression Systems:
Ansul, Protex II, and Pyro-Chem

We provide expert installation, retrofitting, and semi-annual inspections for the most respected brands in the industry. Our service portfolio includes:

  • Ansul R-102: Utilizing advanced proprietary wet chemicals, the R-102 system creates a chemical “blanket” to quench fires and prevent fuel sources like grease from reigniting.

  • Protex II by Heiser: A pre-designed wet chemical solution crafted specifically for the unique needs of commercial kitchens.

  • Pyro-Chem: Offering turnkey products and accessories to protect staff and customers in high-risk environments like gas stations and industrial facilities.
